Our History

The Delhi Diocese of the Orthodox Church was constituted by the Holy Synod in 1975. His Grace Dr Paulose Mar Gregorios took charge as its first Metropolitan in 1976. It was about the same time that a handful of young Orthodox Christians in Ghaziabad (UP) got together under the banner of ‘Christian Association.’ Their main activity was prayer meetings. Our learned Metropolitan took note of this feeble enterprise. In 1977 His Grace came personally to Ghaziabad alongwith a dynamic young Priest, Rev Fr P K Thomas and arranged for regular Orthodox worship. The CNI Church near the Railway Station and the old Holy Child School building were used for celebrating Holy Qurbana on Sundays and for special occasions as Good Friday service.

Foreseeing the potential for growth and the need for regular pastoral care, His Grace appointed Rev Fr P K Thomas as the first Vicar of this new Parish in 1978. Subsequently St Thomas Orthodox Church Society was registered. The next step was procurement of land and erection of a Church building. In spite of heavy odds, a small plot of land was got allotted by the GDA at Lajpat Nagar, Sahibabad, about 10 KMs West of Ghaziabad nearer to Delhi Border.

As the members themselves had meager resources, they had to work very hard soliciting funds-in fact collecting small amounts, going from house to house, those members were of course financially weak, but spiritually strong and highly motivated to carry out the task of building a church of their own, with which they could make an identity. The intercession of all our Saints, especially of St Thomas, our Patron and abundant blessing of God Almighty made it possible for the Church Building to be erected. With a Hindu Temple and a Muslim Mosque nearby, our Church stands as a glowing symbol of religious harmony. The Church has certainly influenced the life of the people in the surrounding areas. With the celestial blessings flowing from the Church and the ardent prayers, the baren and waste land of Lajpat Nagar in the seventies has blossomed into a dynamic township with several Housing Colonies, Schools, Hospitals, and Market etc. From a very small, humble beginning, our Church has now become one of the prominent Parishes of Delhi Diocese, with about 170 Families, 6 Prayer Groups, Units of Martha Mariayam Vanita Samajam, Youth Movement, MGOCSM, Diaspora Prayer Meeting and regular Sunday School upto Class XII.

Institutions under the Society

Our Church Society is running two prestigious English Medium Schools – One Senior Secondary and the Other Secondary – both affiliated to CBSE.

1. St Thomas School, Sahibabad : This School situates within the Church Complex itself. Presently the School has 1750 students on its roll and 72 staff members. The Pass Percentage in class X Board Examination has been 100% throughout. The School has a very good reputation in this region and its work is well appreciated by the concerned Departments as well. The planning for a magnificent building for the Sahibabad School is well underway and the construction is expected to start shortly.

2. St Thomas School, Indirapuram: The Society has acquired about 2.6 acres of land at a prime locality in Indirapuram to expand its education mission. A senior Secondary School was planned and subsequently a magnificent 4 storied building with 72 class rooms, an architectural marvel, was inaugurated on 27th January 2005 by Shri Som Nath Chatterjee, The Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha. Now the School has 2500 students and 170 staff members on the roll and the school has registered steady progress. The School obtained Senior Secondary status in 2006. It is a rare achievement, not only in the Diocese level, but also for the Whole Orthodox Church of India.

Of late, the Parish imparts substantial support, both financial and moral, for the upliftment of relatively weaker Parishes.

The Society has recently stepped in to the noble idea of helping the under privileged by adopting a village for its overall development under the patronage of Ghaziabad District Administration. Kausallya Village has been identified and the formal inauguration of the activities conducted on 6th November 2006 by H B Paulose Mar Milithios, the Catholicose Designate.

There is no doubt that the enviable growth of our Parish within a span of 25 years was made possible with the sustained and united efforts of a single minded group of parishioners and the dedicated leadership and selfless service provided by the Vicars. Late His Grace Dr Paulose Mar Gregorios, our First Metropolitan and His Grace Job Mar Philoxenos, our present Metropolitan have always provided solid support and invaluable guidance at various stages of the growth of our Parish. Above all, we owe to the blessings of our Lord Almighty and the intercession of our Patron, Saint Thomas, the Apostle of India in whose name this Church is dedicated.
